What did Isaiah see? Peace on Earth

A Vision for Peace

We are embarking on a new series entitled Christmas Visions. Isaiah saw into the future when the world was truly at peace. He saw the Peace on Earth that was spoken of at the birth of Jesus. And the world longs for this peace.

Are you Tired of conflict? Take any headline and we notice the vast number of conflicts around the world. There are conflicts between nations, conflicts between various people groups, conflicts in the local community and conflicts in the smallest community, the family.

We as a human species are prone to war and conflict and because we cannot find ways to resolve those conflicts we resort to war, power plays, coercion, manipulation and dominance. We hope that through such resolutions we can finally have peace. We long for peace. Especially during Advent, we as God’s People hope for the peace that comes not through war or power but through the reign of God.

I just read a Pew Research center report that claims the Christian faith is in decline and continues to decline. It is down 12 percentage points over the last 10 years. Meanwhile, the religiously unaffiliated share of the population, consisting of people who describe their religious identity as atheist, agnostic or “nothing in particular,” now stands at 26%, up from 17% in 2009. Our nation is becoming more and more uncomfortable with the Christian faith. Why? There are perhaps a number of reasons that we could point toward to explain what is happening. But perhaps there is one big reason for this decline: a loss of trust in Christians and the institutions surrounding the Christian faith.

When I attended the Incubator training, I was given a demographic study for the area immediately surrounding our church that covered a two and ½ mile radius around the church. Keep in mind, this is our neighborhood.

Phil 4:4-8.

When we think of evangelism we often think of helping someone come to an understanding that they need to be born again.And many treat it like some sort of a sales transaction in which we give a particular pitch and then close the deal.At times being born again Christian carries derogatory connotations largely due to insensitive evangelism methods in which the targeted end up feeling more like a commodity than a real person loved by God.

I grew up in an evangelical setting and the question, “are you born again meant, are you saved or have your prayed the prayer of salvation”, which is the ritual that is used to help others connect with God.

Have you ever been a witness?  Maybe you have been a witness to an accident and found yourself telling your version of what you saw when the accident took place?  Usually when we think of the word witness we imagine a court room with a judge, and lawyers and maybe even a jury.  Usually it is the lawyers who call witnesses to testify about what they saw or experienced.

Each time we recite the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew chapter 6:9-13 we pray these words, “your kingdom come, you will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
